Musiikin sanoituksellinen puoli: Rush ja Neil Peart

Rushin rumpali Neil Peart tunnetaan taitavan soittonsa ohella myös analyyttisista ja pohdiskelevista, mutta hienon symbolistisista sanoituksistaan, jotka kuvaavat ihmisen mieltä, ihmissuhteita ja elämää kokonaisuudessaan.

Tähän blogipostaukseen olenkin koonnut Rushin lyriikoita ja Peartin ajatuksia, jotka ovat mielestäni hienosti sanottuja, tai jotka muuten koskettavat minua itseänikin tavalla tai toisella.

Roll the Bones-lyriikka on puolestaan eräänlainen vertauskuva sille, kuinka "elämä on arpapeliä", riskien ottamista ja sattumien summaa. Roll the bones-ilmaisu tarkoittaa siis nopanheittoa, sillä nopat tehdään norsujen syöksyhampaista (eli luista).

Signals-albumilta tuttu hitti Subdivisions kertoo ulkopuolisuuden tunteesta ja siitä kuinka ihmiset syrjivät toisiaan vain siksi, jos joku sattuu (uskaltaa) olemaan erilainen ja erottuu massasta.

Witch Hunt kritisoi ihmisten ennakkoluuloisuudesta aiheutuvaa ahdasmielisyyttä ja tuomitsevaisuutta noitavainojen symbolisoimana.

Nobody's Hero kertoo siitä, kuinka oikeiden arjen sankareiden hienot teot jäävät vaille arvostusta, kun keskitytäänkin ihailemaan elokuvien ja viihdemaailman kiiltokuvatähtiä.

The Larger Bowl (kuten myös Territories) kertoo ihmiskunnan eriarvoisuudesta. Sen voisi nähdä arvosteluna sille, kuinka länsimaisessa nykykunnassa eletään yltäkylläisyydessä ja siltikin vaaditaan aina vain lisää; samaan aikaan kun toisella puolella maapalloa eletään äärimmäisessä köyhyydessä ja kurjuudessa.

Far Cry-kertsi kertoo siitä, kuinka elämässä tulee vastaan sekä ylä- että alamäkiä, mutta kaikesta huolimatta on mentävä eteenpäin. Itse näkisin toteamuksen optimistisena suhtautumisena siihen, että vastoinkäymiset voi lopulta kääntää voitoksi.

Limelight-tekstillä on siitä mielenkiintoinen tausta, että se kertoo Peartin itsensä suhtautumisesta kuuluisuuteen ja ehdottomaan haluun yksityisyytensä säilyttämiseen - luonteeltaan vetäytyväisempi ja paljon omaa rauhaa kaipaava Peart kun ei halua saada yhtään ylimääräistä huomiota ja selkääntaputusta. Näin ollen bändin fanikaan, kuka on loppujen lopuksi täysin tuntematon ihminen, ei voi olla siis "kauan odotettu ystävä".

Ensin mainittu kertoo ajan nopeasta kulumisesta ja toiveesta, että aika olisi mahdollista pysäyttää, kun on hauskoja hetkiä meneillään.

Mystic Rhythms kertoo ympäröivän luonnon ja universumin suuruudesta sekä salaperäisyyksistä, joita ne edelleen pitävät sisällään.
